The Federal Communications Commission was set up to protect the public from media monopolies, but FCC Chairman Michael Powell (son of Secretary of State and AOL Board Member Colin Powell) has said that he doesn't know what "public interest" means, and called his own agency's oversight "the oppressor."
He has proclaimed his faith in the dark forces ("the market is my religion") and shows little hope of salvation. "I still have had no divine awakening and no one has issued me my public interest crystal ball."
At stake are key issues of further privatization of public communications resources, concentration of media ownership, open access to the Internet, community radio and other media issues. This action comes in the wake of a recent court ruling that struck down ownership limits on broadcasters and sets a dangerous precedent for the few remaining limitations on big media that are currently being "reviewed".
